DRIFTWOOD 2019 pastel on paper 30″x44″

The world around us is regarded evermore superficially through portals – through the restricted vision of a cell phone lens or through the narrow rectangular shape of a car windscreen – this does not encourage us to look further than the frame. I have used the white paper as an element restricting the view, encroaching on and defining the image.

Pastel is a malleable medium which allows me to push and pull the image into shape – defining a ‘log’ as a piece of sculpture, as a part of the natural world with a history defined by its shapes and textures.
