The Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP) is a juried show for Canadian artists throughout Canada with the Parallel Art Show(PAS) being a part of this biennial show. PAS was created for artists from Salt Spring and the Gulf Islands. I was delighted to be awarded the Viewers Choice First Prize and also an Honourable Mention for the Jurors’ Award for my installation piece The Meaning of Symbols: The Meaning of Memories. I created this work based on my experiences growing up before the end of and after WW II using the words and images of that time. I wanted people to see and feel how that war and primarily the symbol of the swastika affected people’s lives and the destruction and cruelty that occurred because of it. I was pleased that the reaction has been so strong from people of all ages and backgrounds to this work.
